The Brazosport Lady Exporter Powerlifting team took home second place at the THSWPA Region IV Division 2 championships in Edna Texas on Thursday, March 2, 2017. The Exporters ran up a total of 33 points from 8 different medalists to place them just behind Shephard (37 points), and just ahead of Needville (30). Brazosport qualified 4 athletes for the State meet in Waco on March 17, and had 2 girls finish as alternates.

For the second year in a row, Jordyn Bustillos earned the regional championship title in her weight class. She totaled 895 lbs (365 squat, 185 bench, 345 deadlift), and is competing in her 3rd state meet. Na'Kyra Darthard also won a regional championship this year in her weight class after being the state alternate last year. Na'Kyra had a 710 total (290 squat, 135 bench, and 285 deadlift). Coach Nelson reflecting with pride said, “Both of these girls didn't get their best total on any of their lifts, but they hung in and competed when things weren't going their way. In the end, their mental toughness allowed them to prevail despite some adversity.”

Briana Tovar placed 2nd in the 105lb class by having one of the best benches (95lb), and best deadlifts (225lbs) in her weight class. She did exceptionally well considering this competition was only the 3rd meet she had ever lifted in, and the competition was going to be much more intense. Lataia Thomas also placed 2nd in her class. Latavia had her best meet of the year at the best possible time. She got personal bests on all 3 lifts.

Victoria Martinez placed 3rd in her class  and Karla Caudillo also placed 3rd in the division qualifying them as state alternates.

Finishing the scoring for the Lady Exporters were the 4th place finish of Gabby Murphy and the fifth place finish of Rosa Navarrete.

Coach Nelson said, “I am extremely proud of all of the girls who made it to the regional meet. They all competed extremely hard, and it showed in the 2nd place finish. This was the highest place we have received at a regional meet since I have been the head coach, and it really was because the girls competed hard all day and really came in focused.”

Brazosport had 10 girls that qualified,  all 10 finished the meet,  8 girls placed, and the other 2 came in 6th (1 place away from points and a medal).

Way to go Lady Exporters! Best wishes at the State Meet.
