BISD Athletics Earns Texas Way District of Distinction Recognition

Brazosport ISD Athletics has been recognized as a Texas Way District of Distinction, an honor awarded to school districts that demonstrate an exceptional commitment to sportsmanship, character development, leadership, and positive athletic culture while creating opportunities for student-athletes to grow both on and off the field.

The honor was announced June 3 at the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association Convention in Round Rock. BISD was one of 39 districts statewide to earn the distinction out of roughly 1,200 UIL-participating districts.

“This recognition reflects the collective commitment of our coaches, administrators, student-athletes, and community to developing young people of character,” said Brazosport ISD Director of Athletics Jay Zeller. “It is not the result of one person, one campus, or one program. It represents an entire department working together to ensure athletics remains an extension of the educational experience.”

To earn the designation, districts must demonstrate excellence in character education, sportsmanship initiatives, leadership development, community engagement, and positive fan behavior. Participating districts also implement programs and practices that reinforce respect, accountability, and personal responsibility among students, coaches, and families.

Brazosport ISD Athletics emphasizes character development as a foundational component of its programs, supporting the district’s vision to set the standard for educational excellence and its mission to graduate each student to be future ready.

“This honor reflects the outstanding work taking place across our athletic programs every day,” Superintendent Danny Massey said. “Our coaches are committed to developing student-athletes who lead with integrity, demonstrate strong character, and are prepared for success beyond graduation.”

Zeller credited the district’s Board of Trustees, leadership team, campus administrators, coaches, and families for helping make the recognition possible.

“Their support allows us to create opportunities for students to grow as leaders, teammates, and citizens,” Zeller said. “Together, we continue to coach beyond the game and help develop future-ready graduates.”

The Texas Way District of Distinction recognition reflects Brazosport ISD’s ongoing commitment to developing champions in competition, the classroom, and the community.

A full-scale emergency response training exercise will take place at the 9th Grade Center next to Brazoswood High School on Wednesday, June 10, 2026. This exercise is being coordinated by the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office as part of ongoing school safety and emergency preparedness efforts aligned with Texas House Bill 33 (the Uvalde Strong Act) and ongoing Texas school safety preparedness requirements.

Community members in the area may notice an increased presence of law enforcement, emergency vehicles, first responders, and possibly a Life Flight helicopter participating in the exercise. There may also be loud noises associated with the training scenario, including sirens, helicopter activity, and simulated gunfire of blank rounds. Please be aware that this is only a training exercise.

The exercise will take place throughout the morning and into the early afternoon on June 10. During this time, roadways surrounding the 9th Grade Center will be closed to regular traffic and activities, including portions of Lakeview Drive and Lazy Lane in Clute. Following the exercise at Brazoswood 9th Grade Center, student and staff volunteers participating in the scenario will be bused under police escort to another site as part of the training exercise to practice reunification procedures.

Our district is serving as the host site for this county-coordinated training exercise. Thank you for your understanding and support as local agencies and school districts work together to strengthen coordination and working relationships among our responding partners.

The Brazoswood High School PM Jazz Band has been selected for recognition in the “High School Outstanding Performances” category of the 49th Annual DownBeat Student Music Awards, a nationally respected honor celebrating excellence in student jazz performance.

The award was published in both the printed and online editions of DownBeat Magazine, where Brazoswood’s PM Jazz Band is featured among outstanding student ensembles from across the country. The recognition appears on page 16 of the digital publication.

DownBeat Magazine is one of the premier publications in jazz education and performance, and its annual Student Music Awards recognize exceptional middle school, high school, and college-level musicians and ensembles nationwide.

“We are incredibly proud of the dedication, musicianship, and teamwork this group continues to demonstrate,” said Brazoswood High School Percussion Director Jeremiah Jones. “This recognition from DownBeat reflects the level of excellence our students strive for every day, and it is an honor to see their hard work recognized on a national stage.”

In addition to the national recognition, each student member of the ensemble received a printed copy of the magazine, along with individual awards that were distributed earlier this week.

This honor reflects the continued excellence of Brazoswood student musicians and the commitment of the Brazoswood High School band program to providing high-level performance opportunities and meaningful musical experiences for students.
With Deepest Sadness: Remembering Our Colleague

It is with profound sadness that we share the sudden loss of one of our beloved staff members, Steven Alvarez, Lake Jackson Intermediate School’s IT Technician, following a vehicle accident yesterday.

Steven lived in Clute and was a proud graduate of Brazoswood High School Class of 2022. He was a valued member of our BISD family, known for his kindness, willingness to help, and the positive relationships he built with both students and staff. He will be greatly missed across our district and community.

Crisis counseling support is available for students and staff who may need assistance during this difficult time. Our hearts and prayers are with Steven’s family, friends, and colleagues, and we extend our deepest condolences to all those affected.

At the May meeting of the Brazosport ISD Board of Trustees, two outstanding educators were recognized as Mission First, Team Always Educators for their dedication to student success, collaboration, and innovation.

The Mission First, Team Always Educator Award recognizes staff members who prioritize student success with purpose and integrity, foster collaboration and trust to strengthen their teams, and embrace innovation and lifelong learning to prepare students to be Future Ready. This month’s honorees were Monica Jones and Holly Spear.

Elementary Mission First, Team Always Educator: Monica Jones of Brannen Elementary
Monica Jones serves as a third grade math teacher at Brannen and exemplifies what it means to be a Mission First, Team Always, Future Ready educator. She consistently places student success at the center of every decision, creating a classroom where students feel supported, confident, and excited to learn. This year, Jones went above and beyond by taking on two additional math classes while a teammate was on maternity leave to help ensure students remained prepared for STAAR success.

Jones fosters strong relationships with students, families, and colleagues while creating engaging learning experiences that inspire pride and enthusiasm. Her classroom is currently filled with creative ocean animal projects that showcase student learning and excitement. Her commitment to innovation, collaboration, and student growth, along with her positive attitude and leadership, make her an invaluable part of the Brannen Elementary team.

Secondary Mission First, Team Always Educator: Holly Spear of Brazos Success Academy
Holly Spear, an English teacher at BSA, was also recognized for exemplifying the Mission First, Team Always spirit. After a midyear teacher retirement, Spear stepped in to take on an additional class with unwavering commitment, helping ensure students stayed on track for EOC success through intentional planning, tireless effort, and additional support for struggling learners.

Beyond academics, Spear builds meaningful relationships with students through consistency, respect, and genuine care. Colleagues shared that she helps students “find their voices and believe in their ideas.” She also fosters a positive campus culture where students and staff feel valued and supported. Her leadership, compassion, and dedication continue to leave a lasting impact on the Brazos Success Academy community.
Summertime BISD Book Bus and Free Student Meals

This summer, Brazosport ISD is once again bringing books, free meals, and community connections directly to neighborhoods across the district through the BISD Book Bus and Meals on the Move programs.

Children and teens can hop aboard the BISD Book Bus, our district’s Library on Wheels, to explore books and keep reading skills growing all summer long. The Book Bus travels throughout Jones Creek, Freeport, Clute, Richwood, and Lake Jackson, making stops at apartment complexes, day care facilities, and select BISD campuses to help provide easy access to books for students and families.

In addition to the summer reading activities, BISD Child Nutrition’s Meals on the Move program will provide free breakfast and lunch meals for children from June 1 through July 2, 2026 at community locations across the district. These programs work together to help keep students nourished, engaged, and connected throughout the summer.

Students of all ages are encouraged to visit the Book Bus, explore books, and participate in activities at participating locations. In addition, BISD Child Nutrition’s Meals on the Move program will provide free meals for all children ages 0–18. Community partnerships and donations continue to help expand the program and place more books into the hands of young readers each year.

Brazosport ISD is proud to continue these efforts to support learning, literacy, and student success beyond the classroom. See the flyers below for specific dates, times, and locations for both the Book Bus and Meals on the Move. We hope to see you this summer as they hit the road once again to serve our community!
BISD Seniors Earn Associate Degrees Through Dual Credit Pathway

As the Class of 2026 prepares to walk across Hopper Field next week, 25 Brazosport ISD students have already accomplished something extraordinary —earning associate degrees while simultaneously completing the requirements for their high school diplomas.

Several of these students were recognized during Brazosport College Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 9, celebrating an important academic milestone. While not all students were able to attend the ceremony due to scheduling conflicts, each has been officially acknowledged by the college as having completed or nearly completed the requirements for an associate degree. Some students may continue final coursework through the summer to complete their degree requirements.

Balancing high school academics, college coursework, extracurricular activities, and personal responsibilities requires a high level of commitment and perseverance. These students have worked over time through BISD’s dual credit pathway to complete significant college coursework while progressing toward their high school graduation.

Through the partnership between Brazosport ISD and Brazosport College, students have opportunities to earn college credit through dual credit courses and advanced academic pathways at low or no cost for tuition. For these students, that opportunity has placed them on a pathway toward earning an associate degree while still in high school.

“This accomplishment reflects the determination of our students, the support of their families, and the commitment of our staff to providing opportunities that prepare students for life after graduation,” said Danny Massey. “Through our partnership with Brazosport College, BISD students have the opportunity to take college courses tuition-free while still in high school, and these students have taken full advantage of that opportunity in an exceptional way.”

Earning substantial college credit before high school graduation provides students with a strong head start toward future goals, whether pursuing a four-year university, entering the workforce, or continuing specialized training and certifications. Many will enter college with significant credit already completed, saving both time and future college expenses.

This accomplishment reflects Brazosport ISD’s continued commitment to providing meaningful opportunities that prepare students to be future ready. The following BISD seniors have been officially recognized by Brazosport College for completing or nearing completion of their associate degree requirements through this dual credit pathway:

Brazoswood and Brazosport high schools have announced the valedictorians and salutatorians for the Class of 2026. These students have demonstrated exceptional achievement through academics, leadership, extracurricular involvement, athletics, and community service during their time in Brazosport ISD.

At Brazoswood High School, Elizabeth Ahn has earned the distinction of valedictorian. Throughout high school, Ahn maintained “A” Honor Roll status while completing advanced coursework, dual credit classes, and earning her associate degree. Her accomplishments include recognition as an AP Scholar with Honor, receiving the Computer Science Merit Award for three consecutive years, and selection into the Texas Leadership Scholars Program.

Ahn served as president of the International Travel Club and secretary of Mu Alpha Theta and was actively involved in the National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society. A defining part of her high school experience was participating in the ENGin Program, where she taught English to Ukrainian students for four consecutive years. She also volunteered extensively through BISD organizations and community events.

Following graduation, Ahn plans to attend University of Southern California to study Human Technology Interaction through the Iovine and Young Academy, combining her interests in technology, business, and design.

Sara Katherine Athon has been named Brazoswood High School salutatorian. Athon balanced rigorous academics with involvement in engineering, art, language studies, and service throughout high school. She has been involved in the Brazoswood Rocketry Program since sophomore year, serving as Project Manager for the junior team, Freebird, and currently as Space Shot Coordinator for the senior team, Goddard 2026 “Fin,” working with the team toward its goal of becoming the first high school program to reach the boundary of space by 2032.

Athon has also been an active member of the Brazoswood Art Program, participating annually in the Houston Rodeo Art Competition and Brazoria County Fair competitions, earning recognition this year as a Houston Rodeo Art Competition Finalist. In addition, she earned the Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish after completing five years of Spanish coursework, including AP Spanish IV and Spanish V.

Outside the classroom, Athon volunteered through STEM camps, community events, and service projects supporting students, teachers, and local organizations. She plans to attend Texas A&M University to study aerospace engineering and pursue a career in project management within the aerospace industry.

At Brazosport High School, Sophie Michele Stowers has earned the title of valedictorian. Stowers excelled both academically and athletically throughout high school, ranking first in her class while completing honors, Advanced Placement, and dual credit coursework. A four-time UIL State swimming qualifier, she earned five individual UIL State medals during her career. She is also a four-time district champion and record holder in the backstroke and butterfly, a three-time regional champion and record holder in the backstroke, and a four-time regional champion and record holder in the butterfly. Her accomplishments earned her recognition as a TISCA First Team selection three out of her four high school years.

Beyond athletics and academics, Stowers demonstrated leadership through National Honor Society and by founding two community initiatives, Ever After Collective and Second Chances, which provide clothing, formalwear, hygiene items, and other essentials to students and families in need. Following graduation, she plans to attend Texas A&M University to study chemical engineering while pursuing her pilot’s license, and she hopes to encourage more women to pursue careers in STEM.

Ashley Blanco has been named Brazosport High School salutatorian. Blanco’s high school journey reflects perseverance, resilience, and academic excellence as she graduated second in her class with a GPA of 102.5508.

Throughout high school, Blanco was actively involved in Business Professionals of America, HOSA, Student Council, National Honor Society, and National Spanish Honor Society. She currently serves as Vice President of the National Honor Society and advanced to BPA Nationals twice, earning honors in Health Science Presentation at both the regional and state levels.

Her academic accomplishments include numerous Student of the Year honors, recognition as an AP Scholar with Honor, and selection as a College Board National First Generation Recognition Program recipient. She also earned National Healthcareer Association certifications as both an EKG Technician and Patient Care Technician.

Blanco’s commitment to service included implementing “Connect More” through National Honor Society, encouraging students to build relationships with elderly community members through games and conversation. Following graduation, she plans to pursue a career in medicine with goals of becoming either a pediatric oncologist or family medicine physician.

“These students represent the very best of Brazosport ISD,” said Superintendent Danny Massey. “Their dedication, leadership, perseverance, and commitment to excellence have made a lasting impact on their schools and community. We are proud of their accomplishments and excited to see the difference they will make in the future.”
